IV. The Path: The Dharma Wheel & The Eightfold Path

THE DHARMA WHEEL

THE EIGHTFOLD PATH

(The Eight Commitments Of Buddhist Recovery)

1. WISE UNDERSTANDING

We commit to embracing the idea of Cause and Effect (Karma), accepting that all beings are responsible for their own actions. We explore the nature of impermanence and examine our relationship to the ideas of craving, grasping, and aversion, as they relate to our addiction(s).

2. WISE INTENTION

We commit to setting a daily intention to live more wisely in our sobriety. We commit to cultivating the Heart Practices of compassion, metta (loving-kindness), generosity, equanimity, and unattached appreciative-joy.

3. WISE SPEECH

We commit to speaking more truthfully in all our affairs. Avoiding outright lies, lies of omission, lies of exaggeration and lies of minimization. We avoid gossip and speech that is untrue or harmful to others.

4. WISE ACTION

We commit to acting more wisely in all our affairs. We reflect on the Five Precepts and renounce all intoxicants and harmful behaviors. We commit to no longer intentionally harm ourselves or others. We commit to healing the wounds of our addiction(s) and, where appropriate, making amends for the harms we have caused in active addiction.

5. WISE LIVELIHOOD

We commit to seeking forms of employment that do not cause harm to ourselves or others. We commit to being an active part of our recovery community and helping others, being of service where we can.

6. WISE EFFORT

We commit to a balanced and sustainable approach to long-term sobriety, working all eight folds of the eightfold path in harmony and balance. We commit to a daily effort to live more wisely in sobriety, while also ensuring time for self-care and taking active steps to prevent relapses or slips in our sobriety.

7. WISE MINDFULNESS

We commit to a daily meditative practice to strengthen our minds and to provide us a stable foundation for our sobriety. We learn to sit with uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and learn to respond more wisely to life’s challenges.

8. WISE CONCENTRATION

We commit to cultivating and strengthening our ability to concentrate and learning to better focus our minds through meditation. We use our ability to concentrate our minds to respond more wisely to impulsive thoughts, feelings, and cravings.
